History

The inaugural Australian Rugby Championship, starting in August 2007, includes eight teams of which three of which are based in the state of New South Wales. Prior to the announcement of Sydney's name, logo and colours, the coaching set up for the inaugural season was unveiled in January 2007.[2] The three man coaching team was led by NSW Country head coach Col Jeffs, with former Wallaby and Waratah Scott Bowen (Easts head coach) and former Waratah and Italy Test lock Mark Giacheri (Randwick head coach) the assistant coaches.[2] The name, logo and team colours were unveiled 27 February 2007 at a launch aboard the museum ship HMAS Vampire at the Australian National Maritime Museum, in Darling Harbour.[3]

The name and logo of the Sydney Fleet feature a traditional Sydney anchor, which was decided upon by the team steering committee with consultation with key Rugby stakeholders.[3] The team's colours of blue and gold were also revealed at the launch aboard HMAS Vampire; similar colours to past clubs representing all of Sydney.[3]

The New South Wales Rugby Union (NSWRU) Chief Executive said that the "Fleet conjures images of strength and tradition, two attributes that I’m sure will become synonymous with the Sydney Fleet,”.[3]

The stadium has a capacity of around 20,000.[1] North Sydney Oval, which has hosted a number sports in the past, including rugby union, is also used for Shute Shield and Tooheys New Cup matches. The Northern Suburbs Rugby Club used the ground also, though they are actually aligned with the Central Coast Rays team.
